Irrigation system tips

Temporarily shutting off the irrigation system

You might want to turn off the irrigation system that waters the lawn around your house temporarily.
Reasons you might want to do this:
1. Keep your lawn area dry the night before the landscapers come, because the mowers on wet lawns can cause damage
2. There is a potential problem with the sprinklers in your area, for example a sprinkler head that is watering all the time and not shutting off properly

To shut off the system temporarily, you can find the irrigation controller in your basement, next to your electrical circuit breaker box.  It is a grey plastic box with the word "Hunter" on the front.

Open the front panel, and turn the dial one notch to the left, from "Run" to "System Off" as shown in the pictures below.

Remember to turn your system back to the "Run" setting when it is OK to resume watering, and it will then continue running according to the programmed schedule (it won't start watering right away).

Alternatively, you can shut off one of the two irrigation control valves you can find on the side of your house where the water line feeds into the irrigation system as shown below.   The valve handles circled in red in the picture are "on" allowing water to flow.   You can turn either one of these valves one half-turn so it is perpendicular to the pipe to shut the water off.

If you have a section of your lawn that remains too wet and the grass is not doing well or the mowers are digging up your lawn, your timer can be adjusted to remedy the situation.  There are a number of us who know how to do this.  (Scott, Randy, Rich, and Ray are some who can help reducing zone sprinkling times.)

If you have a sprinkler that is malfunctioning, please let Scott know as soon as you know about it by emailing [email protected]
Be aware....Letting underground or above ground water problems fester, can create bigger and costly problems.
