Trimming the shrubs

When to trim flowering shrubs, like forsythia, rhododendrons, PJMs, viburnum, azaleas, and mountain laurel:

Trim right after the blossoms go by. (a month after is ok). That means all the shrubs that blossom in the spring should not be trimmed in the fall, or you will be cutting off the buds that begin forming in late summer.

Don't trim the late flowering shrubs in the spring as you will be cutting off many of their buds.  Trim them in the fall after the blossoms go by.

If your flowering shrubs are growing in front of your picture windows, be sure to cut them back enough to allow some extra room for next years growth. Many of us have PJM's and Viburnum in front near the picture windows.

Natural Weed Killer Recipe
If you have any weeds you need to kill, and you don't want to use weed killers with toxic chemicals that might get into the water supply and nearby rivers, there is a natural alternative.  The recipe is:

Combine ingredients in a spray bottle and treat weeds at the sunniest time of day for best results. When looking for a natural alternative to herbicides, a cocktail of vinegar, salt and liquid dish soap has all of the ingredients needed to quickly kill weeds, and will not add additional harmful chemicals to our water table and nearby streams and rivers.
